About Professor Gus Gazzard, MBBChir MA MD FRCOphth
Gus is the Director of Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Professor in Ophthalmology, Glaucoma Studies at UCL London, a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon (Glaucoma and Cataract) and Chief Investigator of the LiGHT Trial of Laser Treatment for Glaucoma.
Based in Moorfields London (one of the world’s leading eye hospitals) as well as other private clinics in London, Gus has considerable experience in his chosen field, developed through decades of work and research both within the UK and internationally.
His primary areas of expertise are Cataracts, Glaucoma and the medical, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma, including small incision and complex cataract surgery. Professor Gazzard is the recipient of the prestigious, competitively awarded “NHS National Silver Merit Award” and is both organiser and lecturer at The Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium (MIGS).
Gus’s research has included clinical trials of Glaucoma surgery and currently he is the Chief Investigator of the LiGHT Trial of Laser Treatment for Glaucoma, a major study into the most effective use of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).
Research and projects
Gus has run several clinical trials in glaucoma surgery. His research interests include angle closure glaucoma, randomised controlled trials of glaucoma treatments, and anterior segment imaging.

Professional profile
Gus is the Director of Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was made a Consultant in the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2009 following a Surgical Fellowship at Moorfields (2006-08) and a Research Fellowship with Prof Peng Khaw in Singapore (1999-2002), where he ran several clinical trials in glaucoma surgery. He pursues research interests in angle closure glaucoma and randomised controlled trials of glaucoma treatments with particular focus on drop-free therapies for glaucoma. Professor Gazzard currently trains other surgeons in the Hydrus, iStent, InnFocus and other innovative minimally invasive surgical procedures at Moorfields.
He is the Chief Investigator of the LiGHT Trial (a large multi-centre £2 million NIHR-HTA funded trial of Selective laser Trabeculoplasty), a member of the EAGLE Study Group (an international multi-centre randomised controlled trial of early lens extraction in angle-closure glaucoma) and a co-founder of the European Glaucoma Society Special Interest Group in angle closure.
